How much does vaginoplasty cost?

What MTF vaginoplasty costs in the US, UK and Thailand, what is included in the price, and how to budget for surgery, travel and aftercare.

In the US, vaginoplasty (MTF bottom surgery) typically runs about $20,000 to $50,000 all-in. Private care in the UK is broadly £15,000 to £25,000. In Thailand, the same surgery with experienced specialists usually costs a fraction of that, from roughly €6,400 depending on the hospital and technique. The final figure depends on the method, the surgeon, and exactly what the package includes.

What is usually included in the price

The headline number is only useful if you know what it buys. A genuine surgery package usually covers the surgeon's fee, the operating theatre and hospital stay (commonly several nights), anaesthesia, standard medications and the first set of post-operative checks. What is often not included: flights, accommodation after you are discharged, a companion's costs, and any later revision surgery.

When you compare quotes, compare like for like. A low surgeon's fee with a short hospital stay and no follow-up can cost more in practice than a slightly higher all-inclusive package.

Why Thailand costs less (and why that is not a red flag)

The price gap is mostly about local costs, not corners cut. Hospital overheads and staffing cost far less in Thailand than in the US or UK, and the leading centres perform a high volume of gender-affirming surgery, which builds real specialist experience. Several Thai hospitals hold recognised accreditation, and one of our partner hospitals carries the Joint Commission International (JCI) Gold Seal.

The thing to scrutinise is never the country, it is the specific hospital and surgeon: their accreditation, their experience with your procedure, and their aftercare.

Technique changes the price

Vaginoplasty is not one operation. Penile inversion is the most common approach. Peritoneal pull-through (PPV) uses tissue from the abdominal lining and is often chosen for added depth and self-lubrication. A sigmoid (colon) technique uses a segment of bowel and is sometimes used when there is limited genital tissue or for revision. Each differs in complexity, hospital time and therefore cost, which is why a personalised quote only comes after a surgeon reviews your case.

Budgeting beyond the operation

Plan for the whole trip, not just the surgery line item: return flights, accommodation for the recovery period after discharge, dilation supplies, travel insurance, and time off work (most people are abroad for several weeks for this procedure). Building these into your budget from the start avoids surprises later.

Frequently asked questions

Is cheaper surgery in Thailand lower quality?
Not inherently. The price reflects lower local costs, not lower standards. Quality depends on the specific hospital's accreditation and the surgeon's experience, which is exactly what you should evaluate, wherever you go.
Does insurance cover vaginoplasty?
In some countries and plans, yes, where it is deemed medically necessary and WPATH criteria are met. Surgery booked abroad is usually self-funded. See our guide on insurance coverage.
Are revisions included in the price?
Usually not by default. Ask each hospital what their policy is on minor revisions and what a major revision would cost before you commit.
What is the cheapest safe option?
The right answer is the lowest-cost accredited hospital and experienced surgeon for your specific technique, not simply the lowest number. We help you compare on that basis.
