How much does gender-affirming surgery cost?

A 2026 cost comparison of gender-affirming surgery across the US, UK and Thailand by procedure, plus what drives the price and how to budget.

It depends heavily on the procedure and the country. As a guide, common gender-affirming surgeries cost the most in the US, somewhat less in the UK private sector, and substantially less in Thailand, often less than half, for comparable, accredited care. The table below gives indicative ranges; a firm figure for your case comes only after a surgeon consultation.

Indicative cost by procedure and country

ProcedureUS (approx.)UK private (approx.)Thailand (indicative)
Vaginoplasty (MTF)$20,000 to $50,000£15,000 to £25,000from ~€6,400
Phalloplasty (FTM, staged)$50,000 to $100,000+£40,000+from ~€11,000
Facial feminization (FFS)$20,000 to $70,000£15,000 to £40,000varies, typically far less
FTM top surgery$5,000 to $10,000£6,000 to £10,000from ~€2,900

Figures are approximate and illustrative only. Costs vary widely by surgeon, technique and what each package includes.

What actually drives the price

Four things move the number more than the country does: the specific procedure and technique, the surgeon's experience, the hospital and length of stay, and what is bundled into the package. A like-for-like comparison matters more than a headline figure, an all-inclusive package can beat a cheaper-looking fee that excludes the hospital stay and follow-up.

Why Thailand is consistently lower

The gap is driven by local hospital and staffing costs, not by lower standards. Leading Thai centres are high-volume and several are accredited; among our partners, one holds the JCI Gold Seal. The right diligence is on the individual hospital and surgeon, not the destination.

Frequently asked questions

Why is gender-affirming surgery so much cheaper in Thailand?
Mostly lower local costs for hospitals and staff, combined with high surgical volume. It reflects economics, not a drop in standards, which is why accreditation and surgeon experience are what you should check.
Are these prices guaranteed?
No. They are indicative ranges to help you plan. A firm quote always follows a surgical consultation that reviews your specific case.
Does insurance help with surgery abroad?
Rarely. Domestic insurance sometimes covers medically necessary surgery at home, but elective surgery abroad is usually self-funded. See our insurance guide.
